If social media are supposed to help spark national conversations, why do so many turn so ugly?
This comes up in the wake of the Lil Wayne stomp-on-the-flag controversy, which set off a torrent of abuse from Facebook posters who said he desecrated the flag.
Even after he attempted to explain himself — no desecration intended, he said on Facebook (45.6 million "likes") — some critics kept up with the abuse, even to the point of wishing him dead from a seizure.
It started over the weekend when video footage showed the rapper, who's been hospitalized several times recently for seizures, walking all over an American flag while shooting his new music video for God Bless Amerika in New Orleans.
