Jodi Arias Suggests She May Take Deal to Avoid Death Rather Than Appeal Conviction

Jodi Arias has suggested this weekend that she might make a plea deal to avoid the death penalty rather than appeal her murder conviction.

Hours before the movie "Jodi Arias: Dirty Little Secret" played on the Lifetime channel, Arias tweeted on Saturday, "Just don't know yet if I will plea or appeal."

It was one of two tweets sent out on her behalf by friends who maintain a twitter account for the convicted murderer.

"Let's clear up any confusion. Anyone asking 4 donation$ right now on my behalf 4 my appeals is not legit," she wrote in one tweet.

Patrice Bergeron out of hospital, travels with Bruins to Boston

Boston Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli issued a statement regarding injured forwardPatrice Bergeron on Sunday morning.
"Patrice was discharged from the hospital Saturday night and will be flying home with the team this morning," Chiarelli said in a team statement.
The Bruins are being quiet when it comes to the injury and like every NHL team being very vague when it comes to talking about it. During his off-day press conference on Sunday coach Claude Julien would only say that Bergeron is day-to-day with what is being called "a body injury."
Not even an "upper" or "lower" distinction there. Just simply "a body injury." That doesn't really narrow it down, but that's probably the way the Bruins want it.
There was a report from Sportsnet shortly after Saturday's game that it could have been a spleen injury, but TSN's Bob McKenzie reported he has heard nobody has guessed the correct body part when it comes to Bergeron's injury.

Broner's power gets to Malignaggi

NEW YORK -- When all the crazy and often vulgar trash talk was finally over, when there was no more discussion of the woman they both dated and argued over, and when it was just mano a mano inside the ring, Adrien Broner and Paulie Malignaggi put on a quality prizefight.
But in the end, it was Broner who backed up his ample talk, which continued after the fight.
Skipping over the junior welterweight division, lightweight titleholder Broner moved up to welterweight and won another world title, outboxing Malignaggi and landing far heavier blows -- after a bit of a slow start -- to take a surprising split decision before 11,461 on Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Malignaggi's hometown of Brooklyn.
Broner, at just 23, is now a three-time titleholder, having won belts at junior lightweight, lightweight and now welterweight in only a 19-month span. He became just the fourth fighter to win titles at 130, 135 and 147 pounds, joining his idol Floyd Mayweather Jr., Manny Pacquiao and Oscar De La Hoya.
Malignaggi, 32, was busy and on his game early, but Broner appeared to take over in the second half of the fight, despite the way the scorecards read: 117-111 and 115-113 for Broner and 115-113 for Malignaggi. ESPN.com also had it 117-111 for Broner, who taunted Malignaggi throughout the fight, saying to him, "You can't hit me."
When the fight was over, Broner and Malignaggi didn't embrace or have any interest in being pals.
Broner started off showing respect for Malignaggi in his postfight interview, saying, "He's a world-class fighter, and I respect him. To come to somebody's hometown and beat them on a split decision, that's saying something. This was a tremendous win for me. I mean, who's doing it like me? Nobody."
Then Broner (27-0, 22 KOs) left Malignaggi (32-5, 7 KOs) with a parting shot.
"I came into town, and I got his belt and his girl," Broner said.
[+] EnlargeBroner-Malignaggi
Al Bello/Getty ImagesPaulie Malignaggi was active and executed his game plan, but in the end, Adrien Broner's far superior power swayed the judges Saturday.
Malignaggi made a big stink about the scores, claiming corruption, saying Broner's powerful adviser Al Haymon had judge Tom Schreck (117-111) "in his pocket" and threatening to quit boxing if he didn't get a rematch, which is very unlikely to happen.
"I thought I out-threw him and outworked him," Malignaggi said. "He was sharp in spots, but he wasn't busy. He didn't land. They looked pretty. When he did work, he was good, but I had the better pace. This is a close fight. I don't even mind having him close or me close. But it could have gone either way.
"In my hometown, as the defending champion, I felt like I should have got it. Tom Schreck is a New York judge and in Al Haymon's pocket. That's all there is to it."
Then Malignaggi ratcheted up his rhetoric:
"I thought it was an entertaining fight and the fans got their money's worth, but it's a lot of bulls---. There's politics, and you get bulls--- like this. It's part of the game, and somebody should do something about it. I don't have to fight again. I made good money in boxing and I work with you guys at Showtime [as an announcer]. I'm not saying it was fixed, but it's always the more connected fighter who gets the decision."

Allan Simonsen's death at Le Mans to be classed as a racing incident

The French legal investigation by the attorney and police into the death of Danish driver Allan Simonsen in the opening stages of the Le Mans 24 hours were continuing after the race came to its conclusion on Sunday, although early indications are that it will not be a lengthy process and that the accident will be attributed to a racing incident.

Simonsen, driving for Aston Martin, left the wet track at the fast Tetre Rouge corner on only his fourth lap, impacted heavily with the barriers and was immediately transferred to the circuit's medical centre but died soon afterwards. It is the first fatality at the 24 since 1997 but although the race was yellow-flagged during the incident it continued and was ultimately won by the Audi team of Tom Kristensen, Allan McNish and Loïc Duval, who were among many of the drivers who's joy at the finish was tempered with sadness at the death of a colleague who was well-respected as a top GT driver.

Much of this unique 8.4667-mile circuit is made up of public roads, of which Tetre Rouge is part and thus under French law must be investigated by the civil system. However, this is does not suggest anything untoward is expected. Phillipe Joubin, head of communications for race organiser's Automobile Club de l'Ouest' (ACO) explained that it would be: "Investigated by the police, it's normal procedure as would be the case with a road crash. The French attorney and police would investigate even should it take place on the private circuit but it would be a different type of investigation."

The ACO was unable to comment on any specifics of the investigation but Joubin believed it would be a swift process, if not one that had already been completed and that early indicators are that no blame will be attributed in the wake of initial enquiries on Saturday afternoon that suggest it will be classed as a racing incident.

Indeed Britain's Anthony Davidson, who finished second overall in his Toyota confirmed that the damp conditions were especially difficult for all the drivers and specifically at Tetre Rouge. "The most difficult thing was to carry on driving after we had heard the news about Allan Simonsen," he said. "I've ran off the kerbs myself many times in that same corner, you realise it can happen to any one. That was a really tough moment for all of us I think, to carry on driving to carry on pushing in those conditions."

Paula Deen Apologizes In Video Statement Addressing Racism Scandal (VIDEO)

On Friday, embattled Food Network star Paula Deen released a video statementaddressing her past use of racial slurs, which overnight became a national scandal.
In the clip, Deen appears visibly upset and at times close to tears. "I beg for your forgiveness ... please forgive me for the mistakes that I've made," she said.
The apology, which looks to have been filmed in multiple takes, comes the same day as a cancelled appearance on the "Today" show, where she was expected to address the allegations of racism leveled against her.

Supermoon makes a big impression: Share your super snapshots

This year's supermoon has hit its peak, but the show isn't over yet.

This is the weekend to see the biggest, brightest full moon of the year, thanks to two lunar phenomena that came together on Sunday morning: The moon reached the closest point in its elliptical orbit around our planet at 7 a.m. ET, and it hit the peak of its full phase a little more than a half-hour later. As a result, the moon looked 14 percent wider than its minimum apparent size, and shone 30 percent brighter than its dimmest glow. For folks who don't keep close track of the moon, the difference might be hard to notice. But in any case, it's a good excuse to look up and enjoy some lunar loveliness. And take some pictures.

So far, we've received more than 150 photos of the full moon — framed by mountains and forests, cityscapes and clouds. One of the choicest shots shows the moon rising from a moody bank of clouds in the French Alps. Photographer Mike Long told NBC News that he snapped the picture from his home's third-floor balcony. "It was one of those moments where, after 30 years of photography, everything just comes together, and it's a nice surprise," he said. "That's what keeps you going as a photographer."

Because of the full moon's timing, the viewing on Sunday evening should be just as good as it was on Saturday evening. There's nothing to fear: Some folks have claimed that a supermoon could cause catastrophes like the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, but that's simply not the case. The best-known physical effect of a super-close moon has to do with the tides. During the lunar full phase and new phase, the Earth, moon and sun are lined up in a way that amplifies the gravitational pull on ocean waters. When the moon is closest to Earth during its full or new phase, that creates what's called a "perigean spring tide." Such a tide may rank as the year's strongest tide, popularly known as the king tide. For many coastal locations, this year's king tide occurs on Sunday night or Monday. Check out this interactive map for a rundown of king tides on the Atlantic coast — and consult this webpage to learn more about tidal phenomena, including tidal lag.

Even if the clouds obscure the moon in your locale, you can still catch sight of the supermoon online, thanks to Slooh Space Camera's webcast. The show gets started at 9 p.m. ET Sunday, and will feature imagery from a telescope in the Canary Islands as well as expert commentary. You can also tune in the show on Slooh's iPad app.

No. 1 'Monsters University' scares off 'World War Z' at box office

"Monsters University" easily graduated at the top of the box-office class this weekend — even as "World War Z" finished with a better-than-expected grade.
Pixar's 3-D animated film starring a bunch of furry creatures was No. 1 with a stellar debut of $82 million, according to an estimate from distributor Walt Disney Studios. While the prequel to 2001's "Monsters Inc." met industry projections, "World War Z" exceeded them. Heading into the weekend, the Brad Pitt action thriller was expected to open with no more than $55 million. Instead, the pricey Paramount Pictures' production took in a healthy $66 million during its first three days of release.
Pre-release audience surveys also suggested that "World War Z" would trail "Man of Steel," which has now been in theaters for two weekends. Instead, the Superman film saw its ticket sales tumble 65% to $41.2 million — leaving the superhero to settle for third place.
Since its first release in 1995, Pixar has seen every one of its 14 films debut at No. 1. “Monsters University” marks the second-highest opening ever for the Northern California-based company, behind the $110.3-million launch of “Toy Story 3” in 2010.
“Monsters University” follows a young creature voiced byBilly Crystal who heads off to college to learn to be a professional scarer. The movie received mostly positive reviews and was well liked by audiences this weekend as well, who assigned the film an average grade of A, according to market research firm CinemaScore. The film appealed to a slightly more female crowd, and 60% of opening-weekend moviegoers were under the age of 25.
The movie did particularly well with Latino audiences, doing above-average business in places such as El Paso andBrownsville in Texas as well as Albuquerque.
“Traditionally, our family films have played great to Hispanic audiences, but I’m going to guess we’ll be even stronger with that demographic on this film,” said Dave Hollis, Disney’s executive vice president of distribution. “We have an appreciation of the changing marketplace for moviegoers and made a dedicated effort to marketing to that audience.”
Upon its release in 2001, “Monsters Inc.” became a huge hit, launching with $62.6 million and ultimately grossing $562.8 million worldwide, not adjusting for inflation. The latest “Monsters” film is on track to meet that global tally, having collected $54.5 million from 35 foreign markets including Russia and Brazil over the weekend.
Meanwhile, many in Hollywood had forecast doom for “World War Z,” after the $200-million-plus film was plagued by numerous troubles, including extensive rewrites. The film, based on a novel by Max Brooks, stars Pitt as a U.N. investigator trying to save both his family and the world from a zombie apocalypse. The picture, directed by Marc Forster, was co-financed by Paramount, Skydance Productions and GK Films.
The surprisingly strong opening is good news for Pitt, whose production company Plan B Entertainment is behind the movie. “World War Z” is now the 49-year-old actor’s biggest opening by far, followed by the $50.3-million debut of 2005’s “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” on which he fell for his costar and now romantic partner Angelina Jolie. In recent years, Pitt has focused on a number of smaller, art house-aimed pictures, such as “Killing Them Softly” and “Tree of Life.”
“I think the fact that Brad Pitt promoted this so heavily and was willing to stand in front of it was a lot of why people were like, ‘Oh, this movie must be working. He’s really committed to it,’” said Rob Moore, Paramount’s vice chairman.
Over the weekend, the movie attracted both females and males in nearly equal measure but appealed to older moviegoers. The crowd, 67% of whom were over age 25, gave the film a B+ CinemaScore.

Monsters University is a Pixar prequel with pith thanks to Billy Crysta

Billy Crystal doesn’t like to repeat himself, but the veteran comic knows that if a bit works you keep doing it.
That’s why the 65-year-old’s taking his Tony-winning one-man show 700 Sundaysback to Broadway next fall. The same sort of rationale was applied to signing up again for the prequel Monsters University, which opened June 21.

Monsters, University, reviewed: 2.5 stars out of 4

Nothing against this well-meaning, colourful Pixar prequel, but if there was one thought that never kept me awake, even after the hundredth viewing of 2001’s Monsters, Inc., with the kids, it was: But where did the monsters come from?
I assumed, and I think most people do, that monsters are like Muppets. They evolve from smaller versions of themselves, and if you trace their lineage back far enough you arrive at a piece of felt, or perhaps a puddle of pixels.
Not so, says director Dan Scanlon, who co-wrote the script with Monsters, Inc., scribes Daniel Gerson and Robert L. Baird. Before their days at the plant that powered Monstropolis city with the screams of frightened children, they had to hit the books.
“I was going to be on board no matter what because I knew [Pixar] was going to make it great,” says Crystal at Pixar Animation Studios, just across the Bay Bridge from downtown San Francisco. “And I loved [Monsters University] because it was a fresh idea.”
Monsters, Inc., the 2001 original Pixar animation, earned more than US$562-million worldwide thanks to the endearing exploits of sidekick Mike Wazowski (voiced by Crystal) and scare champion Sulley Sullivan (John Goodman), who generated energy for their monster city by scaring kids at bedtime.
In the prequel, we find out how the unlikely team became best friends after a rocky college start.
Returning from the first fantasy is the antagonist Randall (Steve Buscemi). New is the demanding Dean Hardscrabble (Helen Mirren), who is not impressed with the two freshmen, and tells them as much.
Billy Crystal and John Goodman record their voice sessions in the same studio at the same time
Also providing voices in Monsters University are Nathan Fillion, Charlie Day, Aubrey Plaza, Alfred Molina, Sean Hayes and Dave Foley, but the movie continues to rely on the connection between Goodman’s Sulley and Crystal’s Mike Wazowski.
To refine the connection, director Dan Scanlon had Crystal and Goodman record their voice sessions in the same studio at the same time, a rarity in the animation world.
“It allowed us to bring a real presence into the movie,” Crystal says. “John’s a great partner and a wonderful guy, and it helped because we take the characters seriously.”
As usual, he doesn’t take anything for granted. He understood that Monsters Universitywould have a loyal following, but he didn’t realize the extent of it until the finished film was screened for students at the University of Southern California to a rousing response.
“They went berserk,” confirms the actor, who attended the recent preview. “Then I realized Monsters University is all about them, because they were six and seven when [Monsters, Inc.] first came out.”
After more than a decade, Crystal continues to be associated with the Monsterscharacter, whose voice is a variation on his Saturday Night Live hate-it-when-that-happens Willie persona.
Now, Mike Wazowski is all in the family after two of his four young grandchildren started to realize their grandfather was famous; he showed them Monsters, Inc. to explain why.
“I couldn’t really put on When Harry Met Sally.”
Soon after, he was doing Mike Wazowski for them on demand. (“You have to call him by his full name because it sounds better,” Crystal says). “So I answer the phone, and they say, ‘Is Grandpa Mike Wazowski there?’” Crystal says. “And I say, ‘Hey, Mike Wazowski, the kids want you to talk.’”
Raised in the Bronx, the comic’s been making people laugh since he was his grandkids’ age. “In elementary school I was always thinking of ways to be funny,” he says. “I had a tight 10 minutes.”
Graduating from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, he hit the road doing standup, then landed the groundbreaking role of the gay son Jodie on Soap. That was followed by a brief stint on SNL.
He increased his profile mightily with box-office smashes When Harry Met SallyCity Slickers and Analyze This, and by hosting the Academy Awards in the 1990s.
Since Monsters, Inc. hit in 2001, he’s been low profile, although he did return to his Oscar duties in 2012.

View Calgary flood evacuation areas, road closures in a larger map
Mayor Naheed Nenshi says the flood evacuation order has been lifted for 65,000 Calgarians, while 10,000 people in several neighbourhoods still must stay away. Here are some key developments:

Evacuation updates

Officials in Calgary announced Sunday that they will allow thousands of people affected by flood evacuations to do self-assessments of their homes.
They're being urged to follow safety guidelines when they enter their homes after the mandatory evacuation orders are lifted at 1 p.m. MT.
A few "red zones" are still off limits in certain neighbourhoods:
  • Roxboro
  • Inglewood
  • Bowness
  • Bridgeland
  • Chinatown
  • East Village
  • Elbow Park
  • Rideau
  • Erlton
  • Mission
  • Stanley Park
  • Elboya
  • Sunnyside
  • Downtown.
Residents are asked to visit one of the re-entry information centres prior to heading home for important information that will support them in self-assessing their home and provide guidance on next steps:
  • Cliff Bungalow/Mission: 2201 Cliff St. S.W.
  • Montgomery: 5003 16th Ave. N.W.
  • Bowness: 7904 43rd Ave. N.W.

Calgary residents who live in apartments and condos should contact their building managers.
Only attempt re-entry if the following criteria is met:
  • The road and sidewalk is dry
  • There is no flood water on entry
  • Inspect the basement for water. If there’s water above electrical outlets, leave the home immediately.
The city says if the safety criteria is met, proceed with the self-assessment. Residents that find issues should take a sheet of 8x10 paper and write as boldly as possible:
  • GAS NEEDED, for natural gas issues
  • ELECTRICITY NEEDED
  • WATER PUMPING NEEDED
Nenshi on Saturday said the downtown core probably won't reopen until mid-week, and power in certain areas could be out for weeks — even months.
The Canadian Red Cross is asking Calgarians looking to connect with family members who have been displaced to call 1-866-696-6484.
For a comprehensive list of affected city services and evacuations, check the City of Calgary blog here.

Blue cart collection suspended

The city announced Sunday evening that it will be suspending blue cart collection service in all Calgary communities until further notice.
Residents are asked to store recyclable materials until collection resumes or take them to the community recycling depots.
Other residential collection services will continue on usual collection days for communities not impacted by flooding.
In flood areas, garbage trucks and dumpsters will only be available at re-entry information centres in each of the flooded communities.
Residents can bring their garbage and flood-damaged materials to these locations for collection.
Residents of flooded communities can also leave large items on their front lawns for collection. They are asked to mark items with a sign if they do not wish for those items to be collected.
Electronics, appliances and household hazardous waste such as propane tanks, chemicals and paints will not be accepted in the garbage but will be collected later from flooded communities.

Can Kobe Bryant Still Be Lakers' Best Player for LA to Be Title-Worthy Team?

For as long as he's donned purple and gold in the City of Angels, Kobe Bryant has been the unquestioned leader of the Los Angeles Lakers.

However, those days may soon be coming to an end.

Coming off an Achilles injury at the age of 35, Bryant will enter his 18th season in L.A. with speculation surrounding his ability to perform at the All-Star level fans have become accustomed to.

As we've seen in the past, Bryant's pain threshold is enormous. Doubting his ability to return from such a crippling injury would be foolish.

But remember, Bryant has been playing at a ridiculously high level for some time now, and as retirement approaches (via the Los Angeles Times), the Black Mamba must indoctrinate the team's next superstar to approach the game the way he has for the last 17 years. He can't do this alone.

Enter Dwight Howard.

With July 1 quickly approaching, the Lakers will need to throw the kitchen sink at Howard in an attempt to lure one of the game's most intimidating defensive presences back to Hollywood.

The good news? Bryant recognizes that his best chance to capture that elusive sixth title is dependent on the Lakers re-signing Howard.

According to Eric Pincus of the Los Angeles Times, Bryant recognizes Howard's value to the franchise, which he discussed in an interview with 710 ESPN Los Angeles:
"Those guys are hard to find, they don't grow on trees. When you have someone like that with his talent level, you have to be able to keep him and lock him in with this franchise."
Howard is expected to talk with other teams, such as the Houston RocketsDallas Mavericks, and Atlanta Hawks (among others), before signing a four- or five-year deal.
"I've spoken to him maybe a couple of weeks ago, just to check in with him. I haven't spoken to him since. I know he's got a big decision to make and I'm sure he'll take the visits and talk to the players on the teams he's considering. We'll touch base a lot more."

Supermoon 2013: West Bloomfield Weather Forecast, When to Watch

This story was reported and written by Emily Stone.

So will the skies cooperate over West Bloomfield so we can all witness the most super "supermoon" this year?

The answer is kind of. The weather forecast is calling for mostly to partly cloudy skies for much of the overnight hours June 22-23, when the moon will appear super large and super close to Earth.

On June 22-23, the moon is at perigee — its closest approach to Earth, according to Astronomy magazine's website. The moon will be just 221,824 miles away from us.

So what's the best time to see this Supermoon? EarthSky says the moon will officially be full at 7:32 a.m. (EDT) Sunday. The actual perigee takes place about 20 minutes prior, according to Astronomy.

Don't want to get up at 7:32 a.m. to see the supermoon? The moon will look just about as full the evening of June 22, according to Astronomy, and it'll be full the evening of June 23.

EarthSky says this is the closest the moon will be to Earth until Aug. 10, 2014.
